Center City Scavenger Hunt - June 12, 2021
The YMF held their first ever Scavenger Hunt event on Saturday, June 12th. Four teams of up to five people each set off on the hunt across Center City beginning at 10 AM, solving a series of 20 clues and traveling to each location for a team selfie. While some teams were more successful than others, a great time was had by all exploring the City on a beautiful summer day. This event was held as a sort of substitute to our usual Winter Social at McGillin’s, which wasn’t able to take place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While still not allowed to gather in a large group, the YMF wanted to give the membership a chance to participate in a social activity while following CDC guidelines. Participants in the Scavenger Hunt were each awarded 20 free raffle tickets for the Charity Raffle Social which would follow on Thursday, June 17th.
The Charity Raffle Social was held on Thursday, June 17th, and was really meant to be a virtual version of our typical gathering at McGillin’s. Attendees logged on to hear the answers to the Scavenger Hunt clues, as well as the results. One team went above and beyond, traveling to 20 different locations throughout Center City! Unfortunately one of their answers was incorrect, but 19 out of 20 was still more than enough to take home the top prize of an additional 20 raffle tickets. With the Scavenger Hunt results out of the way, it was on to the main event of selecting raffle winners. The top prizes given out included two Eagles tickets, an Apple Watch, and a wireless headset. All of the prizes were made possible thanks to the generous donations of our local engineering firms. Finally, the attendees switched over from Zoom to Gather for a new virtual experience! The YMF looks forward to utilizing Gather for future events.
All in all, between the raffle ticket sales and the company donations, the YMF was able to raise over $5,000 which will be donated to local engineering and STEM related charities!
Critical Issues Seminar on Sustainability - May 10, 2021
On Monday May 10 ASCE YMF hosted our annual Critical Issues Seminar on Sustainability. Kirsten Brown P.E. Aviation Engineer, Urban Engineers moderated with speakers Api Appulingam, P.E. Deputy Director of Aviation, Capital Development at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), Leslie Myers McCarthy, Ph.D., P.E., Senior Asphalt Pavement Engineer, Federal Highway Administration, Spencer Finch, Sustainable Development Manager, Langan Engineering and Environmental Services provided awesome insight into sustainability within the industry. Don’t let the serious faces fool you, this was a fun conversation about new technology and pilot programs that utilize solar panels and glass as an aggregate substitute. We discussed how to design sustainably in all projects and how to keep in mind environmental equity, looking at the whole picture of a community while making important planning decisions.
Homies Helping Homies - March 5-19, 2021
For 2 weeks in March, the ASCE Philadelphia YMF collected donations for Homies Helping Homies, a Point Breeze neighborhood-based mutual aid distribution effort which distributes food and other supplies to those in need. As usual, our fellow YMF members did not disappoint! By the end of the drive, we had collected a whole car load of pantry items, cleaning supplies, toilet paper, winter gear, canned goods, and bottles of water. A big thank you to all who donated and helped ASCE contribute to our community organizations in need while staying socially distant.
Engineering Your Mind - February 16, 2021
On February 16, ASCE hosted Elyssa Dixon, a civil engineer turned Certified Mindfulness and Meditation Teacher. She taught us the value of mindfulness from the perspective of an engineer in an awesome interactive event. The night was a mix of Elyssa teaching the group and breaking into small groups to discuss our opinions and get to know other attendees. We learned what mindfulness is and how it can impact our professional trajectory. We discussed tools to build a mindfulness practice using all 5 senses and discussed how to form good habits. To finish the night she led us in a meditation.
Virtual Game Night - January 14, 2021
YMF celebrated the start of a new year by hosting a game night virtually though Zoom. This game night being the first YMF event of 2021 drew a crowd of more than 20, including students and professionals in the greater Philadelphia Area. Attendees were placed into break out rooms to play games such as Codenames, Jackbox Fibbage, and Scattergories. Attendees were able to switch breakout rooms every 30 minutes to enjoy a different game and network with others. Each game began with attendees introducing themselves within the breakout room. After the games were ended, attendees went around the ‘room’ highlighting something positive in their live from 2020 and sharing what their favorite ASCE memory has been. The YMF is looking forward to hosting another game night in the Spring!
Critical Issues Seminar - November 5, 2020
On Thursday, November 5, at 12PM, the Philadelphia YMF hosted the 2020 Critical Issues Seminar virtually through Zoom. The topic for this year’s event was Vision Zero in the City of Philadelphia with specific focus on the implications of the coronavirus pandemic, including the Recovery Streets Proposal authored by the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, Feet First Philly, 5th Square, and the Clean Air Council. We were delighted to have Lily Reynolds, Deputy Director of Complete Streets at the City of Philadelphia, Tara Woody, Safe Routes to School Coordinator at the City of Philadelphia, Erika Morgan, planner at McCormick Taylor and Vice Chair of Feet First Philly, and Randy LoBasso, Policy Director at the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia join us as panelists for this discussion. The dialogue was diverse and comprehensive throughout, with highlights including the background as to how the Recovery Streets proposal was conceived and how the pandemic is really impacting the City’s Vision Zero targets now that data points are available. Other exciting moments included a look ahead to the next Vision Zero plan, which is expected to be released this year, and the new look that’s to come as the City continues to innovate and makes strides towards Zero deaths on our City streets. Thank you so much to Lily, Tara, Erika, and Randy, as well as our moderator and YMF President Katrina Lawrence, for their participation in this panel. Also, thank you to Joe Natale and Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission for their generous offering to host the event through Zoom. And thank you to the 50 or so YMF members who joined us virtually!
Adopt-A-Highway Cleanup - October 24, 2020
On Saturday October 24th, ASCE Philadelphia YMF and ASHE Delaware Valley got together for the first Adopt-A-Highway in over a year. This was YMF’s second community service event in back-to-back weekends and it was another smash success! For the second week in a row we had great weather that allowed us to work hard without sweating too much.
We had 14 volunteers come out that included both students and professionals. Working along Bethlehem Pike, volunteers were able to socially distance and safely pick up trash along the highway. The community must have been excited to see us out there as some of them would honk their horns and wave while they passed. Fireside Bar and Grill was nice enough to let us stage in their parking lot as we usually do., and at the end of the day, we enjoyed some pizza, networked, and reflected on a job well done. We are already looking forward to our next Adopt-A-Highway event in the Spring!
Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Paternship Streambed Maintenanace - October 17, 2020
On Saturday October 17th, ASCE Philadelphia YMF partnered with the Tookany/Tacony-Frankford (TTF) Watershed Partnership to help plant over 170 trees near the Jenkintown Creek in Elkins Park, PA; a great comeback after a long hiatus of in-person events! TTF was planning to postpone this planting project to next spring stemming from a lack of volunteers due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the YMF was able to lend a hand and keep the project on schedule.
Because of the spacing of the trees and the nature of the work, volunteers were able to maintain social distancing while getting the job done. A big thank you to the Tookany/Tacony-Frankford (TTF) Watershed Partnership for having us. This was a great way to spend an early autumn Saturday!
The Pavilion Construction Tour & Technical Presentation - September 15, 2020
On Tuesday, September 15th, we hosted a virtual construction tour and technical presentation of the Pavilion at Penn Medicine. Ed Hanzel, Senior Project Executive, along with many of his project managers from LF Driscoll presented project highlights and gave a virtual walk-through of the construction site.
The presentation highlighted how Penn Medicine along with its IPD (Integrated Project Delivery) partners overcame challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic and expedited its schedule to build 60 emergency department rooms and 60 patient rooms in 20 days for COVID-19 readiness. The team also shared how they managed more than 700 workers at the site utilizing job-site safety protocols which included proximity tracking devices on hardhats, health screening, hand-sanitizing stations and other measures.
We would like to thank Ed Hanzel and his project team for virtually hosting and presenting, and the more than 40 attendees who joined us for participating!
Phillies Game and Tailgate - July 26, 2020
On Friday, July 26th, the ASCE Philadelphia YMF hosted their annual Phillies Game and Tailgate event. The event was well attended, with over 100 attendees ranging from college students to section members. The weather was perfect and the tailgate was very well received. Thanks to everyone who came out and made for a great end of year event!
ASCE Philadelphia YMF Diversity & Inclusion Committee presents TRIVIA NIGHT - July 13, 2020
On July 13, 2020 The ASCE YMF Diversity and Inclusion Committee debuted with their first event! The event hosted members of ASCE, National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Society of Women Engineers (SWE), and Women in Transportation Seminar (WTS) for some fun virtual networking. Attendees were randomly placed into teams of 3-4 people. The event oscillated between the full group and small break out rooms to deliberate the answers to their Trivia questions. “The Trivia Experts” came out victorious and won a gift card to their choice of Black and Mobile or Uncle Bobbies!
