  • Panel Discussion on FE Exam at Drexel University - March 3, 2020

On Tuesday, March 3, 2020 ASCE Philadelphia YMF visited Drexel University to discuss with students the importance of taking and passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, while explaining its role in the journey to becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE). YMF volunteers Dani Schroeder, Tyler Farley, and Paige Glassman kicked off the night with introductions and a brief presentation outlining the exam, testing procedures, time constraints, topics of study, and providing useful ASCE and NCEES study tools. The volunteers then joined in with several students, who have also already passed the exam, to create a panel and field any other questions students may have. The panel not only took this time to answer students’ questions, but to also share their first hand experiences and provide quality advice to prepare, perform, and conquer the exam. The ASCE Philadelphia YMF would like to thank all the volunteers for their time and the Drexel University Student Chapter for organizing and hosting this informative event.

  • Annual Winter Social - January 13, 2020

On Monday, January 13th, the YMF hosted the annual Winter Social at McGillin’s Olde Ale House. This tradition was another great success with over 170 local, young engineers in attendance for a night of networking, raffles, food, and fun.

As part of the event, the YMF held its annual charity raffle. Generous donations from over 25 local engineering companies were provided and the raffle raised $3,800 to benefit local non-profit organizations and STEM initiatives, such as the Future City competition and Hub of Hope, among others.

The YMF would like to extend its sincerest thanks to all of our donors for their continued support, as well as to everyone who came out to the event and support the YMF in other ways throughout the year. We could not do it without you!

  • Penn Pavilion Construction Tour - December 5, 2019

On December 5th, project representatives from Balfour Beatty/ LF Driscoll joint venture and Foster and Partners gave a technical presentation and a tour of the project to ASCE Philadelphia YMF members. As the new patient tower which houses 500 patient rooms, 47 operating rooms across its 17 floors and 1.5 million square feet, the project team faced numerous challenges throughout all phases. The representatives explained that having all parties including the owner, engineers and architects work as a single IPD(Integrated Project Delivery) team allowed them to execute the project most timely, economically and efficiently. As the project is anticipated to be completed in Spring of 2021, the project team would like to invite the ASCE YMF members for another construction tour when the project is closer to complete. Look out for future event flyers for more details.

  • SEPTA's Elwyn to Wawa Construction Tour - Novmeber 15, 2019

With the help of Scott Cepietz and Anthony Fitzpatrick of Michael Baker International, ASCE Philadelphia YMF College Contact Co-chairs, Tyler Farley and Paige Glassman, organized a construction tour aimed towards college students. On November 15th, several students from the surrounding ASCE Philadelphia College Chapters toured the construction of SEPTA’s service on the Media/Elwyn Regional Rail Line from its current terminus at Elwyn Station to US Route 1 in Middletown Township, PA. They had the opportunity to learn about the history this Regional Rail service extending beyond Elwyn, which had been suspended in the 1980s, the construction that had already been completed in earlier phases, along with the current & future construction plans. With an early action phase to stabilize embankments on sections of this line already completed in 2010, the tour focused in on the next component of this 3-mile service restoration, which is currently underway. This phase involves significant infrastructure renewal, including retaining walls and the rehabilitation or replacement of bridges and culverts, track, catenary and structures, and signals. The last component of this project will be the construction of a new station, a 600 car parking deck, and an intermodal connection.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to Sean McMahon from SEPTA and Michael Baker personnel Chris Heim, Dan Rush, and Jim Hopkins for taking the time out of their busy day to guide the tour.

  • American Street Construction Tour - November 13, 2019

The cold didn't stop us on Wednesday, November 13, for ASCE Philadelphia YMF's tour of the GSI Construction of the American Street Improvement Project. We would like to extend a huge thank you to Katie Drake from PWD and Trevor Woodward and Nicole Carey from Gilmore & Associates for giving us their time to present about the project! The tour covered GSI features including bioswales and underground stormwater infiltration columns. We had the opportunity to learn about important design considerations from the designers themselves, including sizing the GSI systems and taking soil samples to ensure efficient stormwater infiltration for each system. It was interesting to learn about the collaboration that was necessary between the design team, business owners, neighborhood groups, and the contractors on such a diverse project. The tour was followed by a social at Evil Genius Beer Company where attendees were able to network and talk directly with the presenters.

  • Life Do Grow Service Day - August 17, 2019

In collaboration with Urban Creators, ASCE YMF volunteered at Life Do Grow farm on Saturday, August 17th. The farm is located a couple blocks north of Temple University, nestled against a Septa regional rail retaining wall. You’ll know you’re there once you start to see colorful murals, solar panels, painted signs, and sunflowers. But that’s not all. At Life Do Grow farm you can find jalapenos, bell peppers, sweet peppers, scotch bonnet, watermelon, carrots, tomatoes, basil, mint, lavender, thyme, beets and more depending on the season.

After greeting us, Alex, one of the farms founders, and Jovon, a farm manager, brought everyone into the farms kitchen. They started by giving us a background of the farm. It all started when how group of community members and curious Temple students got together with a vision for the land which at the time was serving as a public dump. Today the land has flourished into a self-sustaining farm.

Most of what we accomplished on Saturday was in preparation for an event they were having the next day. We first helped clean up and organize the kitchen and classroom areas in preparation for a chef that would preparing with the vegetables and herbs found on the farm. Then we moved a pile of compost between the office and tool shed to make way for a seating area where guest could come and listen to a DJ that would be playing the next day. Finally, we got to weed two rows of a variety of peppers. Some of the weeds had become entangled with the peppers and were drawing precious nutrients away from the peppers.

Throughout all of these activities, Jovon and Alex were sweating right there next to us. They answered questions about the history of the farm, the neighborhood, and the different projects that have launched from service days like ours on the farm. At the end of the day we were sweaty, covered in dirt, exhausted, smiling, and laughing. Thanks to Alex and Jovon for hosting us at their farm. We hope to be back soon.
