  • Critical Issues Seminar - April 25, 2018

On Wednesday, April 25, 2018, the Philly YMF hosted its annual Critical Issues Seminar. This year, the topic was the Federal Infrastructure Plan. Shepherding the large gathering of nearly 60 people through the discussion was a distinguished group of panelists that included: Michael Girman (Vice President at AECOM and ACEC/PA's Government Affairs Committee Chair); Stephen Mullin (President and Principal of Econsult Solutions and Adjunct Instructor at Drexel University's Center for Public Policy); and last but not least Leslie Richards (Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation). The discussion ranged broadly from American's infrastructure needs and current proposals from the White House to finance the infrastructure, to the challenges in securing adequate funding from a political and economic perspective. Feedback from the panelists and audience was positive. Philly YMF would like to extend a huge thank you to all panelists and attendees for yet another successful Critical Issues Seminar!

  • Fairmount Water Works Mussel Hatchery Tour - April 12, 2018

On Thursday, April 12, 2018, the YMF partnered with the PA Section of the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and the American Water Resources Association Philadelphia Metro Area Section (AWRA) for a unique event at the Fairmount Water Works Freshwater Mussel Hatchery.

Nearly 70 attendees joined together for networking followed by a tour of the freshwater Mussel Hatchery, courtesy of the passionate staff of the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary. The tour provided information about the Schuylkill Action Network and the importance of freshwater mussels to the Delaware Estuary. Angela Padeletti, Science Programs Manager at PDE, explained that mussels naturally clean our water by filtering several gallons of water per day, and even live to be 100 years old. Interestingly, they need specific fish to complete their complex life cycle, so restoring creeks and rivers is a holistic endeavor.

Following the tour of the Fairmount Mussel Hatchery, Ken Hinde took the attendees behind the scenes of the Water Works to learn the history of the remarkable Civil Engineering Landmark! From its opening in 1815 as the sole water pumping station for the City of Philadelphia, through the creation of the Fairmount Dam and the Olympic sized Kelly Natatorium, Ken amazed the attendees with his expansive knowledge. Thank you to all of the wonderful tour guides and staff and to all those who came out for the event! Click the picture below for more photos from YMF events:

Over 25 attendees enjoyed networking and small bites co-sponsored by the YMF and PSPE, followed by a series of brief technical presentations with one PDH being offered to participants! Eric P. Johnson from Pennoni presented on teh Thompson Ave / Sproul Rd Sewer Extension in Springfield, PA and Margaret McDevitt, also from Pennoni, presented on the Improvement Project in Coatesville, PA. Finally, Kristin Leese and Rebecca Reyman from Amtrak, presented on the Major Infrastructure Renewal Project that took place in Penn Station, NY. • Annual Winter Social - January 22, 2018

On Monday, January 22, 2018, the YMF held its Annual Winter Social at McGillin's Olde Ale House in Center City, Philadelphia. This is typically the YMF's largest event of the year, and this year was another great success. Over 160 engineering professionals and students were able to catch up with colleagues, network with students and young professionals, and celebrate the Eagles recent NFC Championship victory. Attendees consumed some great food and drinks, met other local engineers, discussed career opportunities, and learned about each other's companies.

The YMF would like to extend a HUGE thank you to the companies that donated to this year's event, with contributions exceeding $4,500 (see our sponsor board below). This year's raffle consisted of 27 prizes, worth over $2,700, all raffled off at the event. The remaining donations and money collected from raffle sales will allow the YMF to contribute to local, non-profit organizations, such as the Future City Competition, Philabundance, and other worthy causes as voted upon by the YMF Board.

This event could not be successful without all the help of our fellow YMF members, so another big thank you to everyone who helped make this event run smoothly, particularly the YMF's Vice President, Eammon Farley, who lead the event coordination! The time and effort that all our members put in is greatly appreciated.

We are already looking forward to another successful Winter Social next year!

  • Joint Happy Hour with ASHE Delaware Valley - December 7, 2017

Thursday, December 7, 2017, the YMF teamed up with ASHE Delaware Valley for a joint happy hour at Conshohocken Brewing Company in Bridgeport, PA. There were around 40 attendees that enjoyed happy hour specials and an amazing selection of appetizers. It was nice to have the event outside of the city, so that members that can't usually make it to events in the city could have a chance to come out and network. Also, it's always exciting to try out new locations and create some new connections!

This is one of our annually recurring joint events with ASHE. We look forward to working with them again next year, including for the Adopt-A-Highway clean-up event this spring!

  • Philabundance Hunger Relief Center - November 21, 2017

On Tuesday, November 21st, several members of the YMF went to the Philabundance Hunger Relief Center in Southeast Philadelphia to help sort food that's been recently donated in preparation for the Thanksgiving holiday! Members primarily worked in the facility's refrigeration area sorting and packaging 10,000 lbs of perishables for distribution! Everyone had a great time and left feeling like they'd made a difference.

The YMF has a proud history of serving the Philadelphia community through Philabundance: we've made charitbale contributions numerous times, both in the form of money from the Winter Social and canned goods from our CANstruction effort. It was great to add a donation of our time to that list. We thank Philabundance for all they do for Philadelphia and look forward to working with them again in the future!

  • Viaduct Tour - October 25,2017

On Wednesday, October 25th, the YMF toured the Viaduct Rail Park and got to see firsthand the progress of Phase 1 of the transformation of abandoned elevated rail lines to a new recreational facility. The tour was led by Angelo Waters and Urban Engineers who were the designers of the project. 16 Younger Members got to see some of the early structure work and the beginning of the landscaping which will made this park a destination for years to come once it opens in 2018. Everyone is excited to see what the finished project will look like. Big thanks also to our Philly YMF Technical Events Co-chairs Scott Cepietz, PE (Michael Baker) and Kevin Walsh (Pennoni) for organizing the tour.

It's worth noting that this was the YMF's first-ever "Members Only" event. We value the input and participation of all of Philadelphia's young civil engineers, but wanted to take an opportunity to especially thank our paid members. We expect to have other member-exclusive events in the future, so if you'd like to attend please make sure to renew your membership!
