The application
forms are different for each state (PA, NJ, DE). However, they all require
the following information:
- Applicant’s name and address
- Educational
background
- Work experience
- Four years of qualified engineering experience
- Must have worked under a PE
- Experience must be detailed with dates and duration
- Form to be completed by college’s registrar
- References: they must have a copy of your work experience. Please
note: Your supervisors must be PE’s.
- It is highly recommended that you use your direct supervisors as your
references; some states require it.
What is “qualified engineering experience”? · Creative

- Applying sound judgement
- Arriving at decisions
- Giving engineering advice
- Construction Management
- Construction Inspection
NOTE: NCEES states that you need a combination of this experience. Be
sure to make reference to these aspects of experience. Emphasize your
design experience.
When to apply?
- If you are taking the October exam, July 1 is the deadline.
- If you are taking the April exam, December 1 is the deadline.
- Organize your application two months before it is due. Follow up with
your college registrar’s office and your references to make sure
the forms are submitted on time. The board will not inform you of missing
material!
Make
copies of all of your forms and correspondence in case they are lost
in the mail. You should send your application through USPS Certified
Mail.
If you plan to use your time in a graduate school as work experience
on the PE application, check with state that you apply first. Both Delaware
and Pennsylvania currently allow one year of graduate research as relevant
experience.
If you have a degree in Engineering Technology or a degree from a non-accredited
school, you may have to acquire additional work experience prior to
being eligible for the exam. Check with your state to verify their requirements.
