The ASCE YMF CANstruction team competed in the 8th Annual CANstruction Philadelphia Competition on May 9, 2014 against 15 other teams in a very successful Philadelphia CANstruction competition. Team YMF built a trash vehicle entitled "Hauling off Hunger," donating more than 14,000 cans to Philabundance, the region's largest food bank and hunger relief organization. Due to a large fundraising effort, the team raised exactly $3,000. This year, a link on the YMF website allowed the team to solicit personal donations; more publicity for this link might be able to help the team secure more personal donations in the future. A big "Thank You" to our sponsors, including AECOM, Baker, Gilmore & Associates, Hatch Mott MacDonald, Jacobs, JBC, JMT, KMJ, Pennoni, TimHaahs, TranSystems, Urban Engineers, Costco, Wegmans and Campbell's.

The team came up with a design for the dump truck and went through iterations of team names ("Dumping on Hunger" was not well-received at a board meeting), ending up choosing Hauling off Hunger. The team traveled together to Costco and Wegmans to purchase the many of the cans used in the structure, but the majority of cans the team had to work with came from a very large Campbell's donation. A few days before build night, with the help of local Temple students, the team transported cans from cars and trucks to the storage room in Liberty Place.

On build night, many team members and students showed up to lend a hand to the YMF CANstruction effort. The team started building around 6pm and ended before midnight, leaving plenty of time to head to the bar to celebrate.

Select team members were present at the CANstruction Gala, which also took place in Liberty place. After a week of heavy traffic through Liberty Place, the dump truck was still standing, with only one wheel which had sustained damage due to vandalism. Compared to many of the other structures, the dump truck was in great shape at the Gala! The team took home the "Most Cans" plaque for donating the most cans to Philabundance of any of the other teams. Canned food delicacies, wine and beer were served at the Gala, and a great time was had by all.

Team members and college students showed up one last time for Decanstruction, hauling loads of cans to the loading dock to be donated to Philabundance. It was amazing seeing all of the cans that were donated. A successful CANstruction 2014!
