On November 13, YMF hosted a facility tour of the ArcelorMittal SMART steel plate facility in Conshohocken. The majority of the 75 acre site houses 1,000,000 sq ft. of steel processing facilities that will produce 260,000 tons of steel in 2013; approximately 117,000 tons of which is heat treated. Attendees had the opportunity to see first-hand the operation of thick steel plates being processed through the reheating furnaces, 110" roughing mill, Steckle Mill, cut-to- length, and a multitude of steel heat treating processes such as quenching, tempering, and annealing. The steel plates produced from this plant service a broad range of markets from appliances, bridges, ships, to military grade armor. At the conclusion of the tour, ArcelorMittal employees provided a Q&A session regarding a vast spectrum of steel industry topics with which they are involved. ArcelorMittal is the largest steel manufacturer & mining company in the world and provides an exceptional resource for steel expertise close to Philadelphia.
